Fourteen ASCO members got to walk the 3/4 mile to the Fort Rock Cave on July 13, a pleasant 73 degree, partly cloudy day with a slight wind. We were driven about a mile from the parking lot through gated private land. Now a state park with only guided access across private land, the cave itself has a grand southern view with the floor down to what is considered its base after numerous excavations. The Park Guide had a six foot staff that showed the various layers of the cave that have been identified, including the infamous sandals layer. Close to the cave entrance is a plaque dedicated to Richard (Rich) Barber who, along with Susan Gray and other ASCO members, worked to get the sight preserved. The tour was about 2 hours and members were free to explore the Fort Rock outcropping and museum on their own.
