Central Oregon hosts several archaeological sites that are helping craft a new story of peopling of the Americas. The Archaeological Society of Central Oregon (ASCO) offers the opportunity to learn and support this and other work. In conjunction with the BLM, one of ASCO’s recent stewardship projects involves documenting long-abandoned homesteads dating back to the late 1800s in the Tumalo & Plainview areas. Shortly after settling, homesteaders began reaching westward to the mountains for water to irrigate their crops. Searching old newspapers stories, deed records, water right filings, and old maps, combined with new lidar imagery, has enabled members to begin unraveling this history.
