ASCO’s Pioneer Roads Field Trip
with John Zancanella
Saddle Up your car’s, we’re hitting the road!
John Zancanella will share his new research on roads dating between 1845-1860 particularly related to Elliot (1853), Macy (1854), and Steen (1860). The field trip is limited to 6-7 cars (12-14 people) as we will be in caravan and making frequent stops. The trip will be 5-6 hours. High clearance cars and 4x4’s are not needed but we will be traveling on gravel/dirt roads and you need good tires. We will get dusty. Sign-ups open at 8:00 AM August 3rd via email Val Anderson, archoval@gmail.com
8:45Rendezvous at Big Sky Park on Neff. Collect permission slips. Carpooling in not encouraged because of Covid. All participants need to be vaccinated and must be ASCO members.
9:00 Depart. Take Alfalfa Mkt Rd to SR27. Make short trip to Powder House Cove for potty break. Follow SR27 south into Bear Cr then up Little Bear Cr and east along wagon route to Held (where the turnoff to Brothers is). We will follow the road south from here to Pringle Flat where I plan a stop. Then on to Brothers Rest Area for another potty break and orientation for the return trip to Bend along Hwy 20 (probably two more stops). Our last stop will be on the side of the highway in Dry River Canyon where we’ll discuss the descent into the Deschutes River basin by the Elliot Lost Wagon Train (1853).
Note: There doesn’t seem to be a good place to take lunch unless we stop on the side of the road somewhere.
3:00 Return to Big Sky Park
